Baybayin: Filipino Writing & Cultural History

This workshop introduces participants to Baybayin, one of the precolonial writing systems of the Philippines. Through a combination of education, cultural discussion and hands-on art making, participants learn about the historical significance of the script and its contemporary revival within Filipino communities around the world.


Participants are guided through the basics of Baybayin writing and learn how to write their names or meaningful words using the script. The session concludes with the creation of a personal artwork incorporating Baybayin lettering.


The workshop provides both a cultural and creative entry point into Filipino heritage while encouraging participants to reflect on language, identity, and the power of writing systems as cultural knowledge.

• Explore the cultural history of precolonial Philippine scripts

• Learn the fundamentals of the Baybayin writing system
• Create a personal artwork incorporating Baybayin
