Hinga at Hangin

2025

Wood base, foam, plaster, textiles

Inspired by Calgary’s identity as “Blue Sky City,” Hinga at Hangin (Breath and Wind) is an immersive sculptural installation that invites viewers to step inside a space shaped by airflow, movement, and cultural memory.

The work combines a sculptural wooden base with layered textiles and hand-formed surfaces in foam and plaster, creating a form that echoes organic structures found in nature (Balete tree). Crochet elements are featured on the structure referencing both wind patterns and intergenerational craft traditions passed down through family and community.

The sculpture invites pause and whimsy, inspired by the legends of the Balete tree in Filipino folklore and spirituality.

Hinga at Hangin explores the relationship between air, memory, folklore and belonging, suggesting that the invisible forces shaping landscapes and communities are often the same ones that connect them.
