Pagalala at Pagasa
Pag-alala at Pag-asa (Remembrance and Hope) 2025, was created as a tribute for Lapu-Lapu Day, honouring Filipino history, ancestral memory, and the resilience of the Filipino community in Vancouver. In partnership with Filipino BC and Astro Arts Festival.
The mural draws from precolonial Filipino cosmology and funerary traditions. Central to the imagery is Mayari, the precolonial Tagalog goddess of the moon, who symbolizes reflection, guidance, and the quiet strength found in darkness. Her presence represents cycles of grief and renewal, reminding viewers that light often emerges through moments of loss.
Through these symbols, the mural acknowledges the Filipino value of honouring the dead while sustaining the living memory of community.
Together, the imagery of Mayari, the victims and flowing ornamental forms reflects a cultural philosophy of remembrance, continuity, and collective healing — holding space for grief while affirming hope for the future.
